Executive — Sue Industrial Co., Ltd.
Q

How did the company get started?

A

The company started about 23 years ago. We began by doing contract aluminum die-casting work. For motorcycle parts, we initially cast only brake levers, clutch levers, and brake calipers — we weren't making complete brake shoes yet. Later, seeing the good prospects for these parts, we decided we should make a complete product line, so we started learning and developing the chemical compound side of the business. We've been selling brake shoes under the YASAKI brand from the very beginning. After about 5 years, the company expanded from a shophouse in a soi and moved here to Sathu Pradit Road. At first we still mainly did contract aluminum casting, but as brake shoe sales grew, we started expanding production to other motorcycle parts under the YASAKI brand — disc brakes, wheel hubs, mirror brackets, throttle bushings — gradually developing from smaller parts to larger, more complex ones, with an increasingly complete production line.

Q

The name YASAKI sounds Japanese — what's the story behind it?

A

You have to go back over 20 years. At that time, the market favored Japanese products — you had to have "Made in Japan" to sell well. My father had a somewhat playful idea. Back then, Yamaha, Honda, and Kawasaki motorcycles were very popular. He combined them together and came up with the word "YASAKI." But in reality, it's a 100% Thai brand, fully registered as a trademark in Thailand.

Q

What YASAKI products are currently on the market?

A

Our main market focus is brake shoes and disc brake pads. We also have other motorcycle spare parts — front and rear wheel hubs, brake levers, clutch levers, mirror brackets, valve covers, clutch shoe bowls, etc. We also have disc brakes for pickup trucks and passenger cars, though those haven't been heavily promoted yet. All of our products carry the YASAKI brand. We still also do contract aluminum die-casting work to order.

Q

When did you start manufacturing brake shoes, and what strategy made YASAKI brake shoes so popular?

A

We started producing brake shoes almost 20 years ago. Our production capacity was quite small at first and has been gradually expanding over the last 15–16 years. Our key strength is our focus on quality — it has been my father's policy from the very beginning that brake shoes and wheel hubs are parts directly related to user safety. So we must emphasize quality above all else. Before any product goes to market, we must be confident in it. We conduct multiple stages of testing, including testing on actual motorcycles under various real-world conditions, to ensure our customers receive maximum safety.

Q

We understand you also export to other countries?

A

Yes. Currently most of our exports are distributed through in-country agents. For larger accounts, we appoint them as exclusive distributors for their country. For example, customers in Dubai and Iran distribute our products throughout the Middle East region.

Q

Do differences between new and old motorcycle models require significant additional investment?

A

We're fortunate in that the parts we make are standard components, so the designs don't change much between models. One part can fit multiple motorcycle models, which minimizes confusion in purchasing decisions — unlike cosmetic/styling parts, which vary widely and change frequently. General parts differ quite a bit between automatic and manual transmission bikes, but brake shoes and hubs don't vary that much and can use the same production line. That said, we do introduce new products specifically for automatic bikes, such as clutch shoe bowl sets.

Q

Do you supply products for OEM?

A

Not anymore. We used to supply some manufacturers, but due to various policy considerations, we later decided not to pursue that route. We now focus exclusively on the aftermarket.

Q

How does YASAKI compare to OEM products?

A

In terms of quality, there's virtually no difference because we use the same grade of materials. At YASAKI, we use quite high-quality raw materials — our aluminum is high grade, suitable for producing wheel hubs, and our chemical compounds are almost entirely imported. So in terms of quality, we are on par with OEM, but our pricing is significantly lower.

Q

Brake systems are safety-critical components. As regulators plan to set product standards, how are you preparing?

A

YASAKI products are normally sent for testing at the American Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association, and we've already invested in in-house testing equipment that tests each daily production lot. So we're quite confident that our products would pass any testing requirements — our specifications are already set above standard, so we're essentially over-spec already.

Q

Environmental concerns are making asbestos-free brake pads more popular. What's the difference, and how does it affect consumers?

A

The asbestos debate is currently very polarized. One side says it's hazardous to end users' health; the other says it's hazardous to manufacturers rather than users, since the amount of asbestos fibers released on the road is still lower than dust from exhaust pipes. Research results differ so significantly that no firm conclusion has been reached about risk to users — but risk to manufacturers is certain. As for the campaign to phase out asbestos, the chemical alternatives currently cost far more, so switching immediately would significantly raise production costs. YASAKI is continuously researching and developing chemical formulas to strike the right balance — a formula that works economically for the manufacturer and that consumers prefer.

Q

Has YASAKI's popularity led to counterfeiting problems?

A

It happens from time to time. Domestically we can manage it to some degree, but internationally it's much harder to control. What we can do for now is register our trademark in every country where we conduct business.

Q

Any message you'd like to leave for consumers?

A

I'd like to emphasize the importance of safety awareness. When choosing safety-related products — not just brake pads, but all components — if you use substandard parts and something happens to your life or property, or that of someone you love, it simply isn't worth it. These days most manufacturers are becoming more quality-conscious because the economy isn't great and consumers are making smarter purchasing decisions. If a product is poor, word spreads and it won't sell. I'd encourage people not to choose solely based on price, but to choose quality products at a fair price — I think that's a true WIN-WIN.
